From Intelligent Diagnosis to Autonomous Decision: A Journey through Prognostics & Health Management (PHM) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in Smart Manufacturing

<Abstract>

Since the term “Industry 4.0” was first introduced in 2011 as a manufacturing innovation strategy based on digital transformation, smart manufacturing (or smart factory) has emerged as a major research field in both academia and industry. In this context, critical digital transformation technologies such as big data analytics, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and so on have attracted significant attention for successfully developing smart manufacturing systems. The above-mentioned technologies can be integrated into two key enablers—prognostics and health management (PHM) and cyber-physical systems (CPS)—for smart manufacturing systems. PHM includes fault diagnosis and prediction of the remaining useful life of manufacturing processes and systems. On the other hand, CPS is a system that seamlessly integrates cyberspace and physical entities, enabling real-time interaction. Combining them enables the realization of intelligent diagnosis and autonomous decisions, thereby achieving the ultimate smart manufacturing system. In this talk, several successful case studies on PHM and CPS are given for the robotic-welding system, metal additive manufacturing system, blow molding system, and so forth.
